My NASCAR Adventure

Buck Baker Driving School

I flew My Cessna 210 from Lookout Mountain after completing the Hang glider school and landed on Rockingham NCs Dragstrip, walked over to the 1 mile oval and signed in for the NASCAR driving school. Due to my excessive height (6'3") for a race car driver, I had only one choice of car to drive...the car of Buddy Baker who is 6'4" and 30 pounds heavier than I am. This was the best part of the 3 day school as it was one of the fastest cars on the course using the 600hp Nascar motor instead of the 400hp Busch Cup motor the other guys used. I achieved a 114mph top speed on the last session on the track compared to 130mph for the pros and had one instructor ask me if I had driving experience! What a jolt to the ego that was! Spent all 3 days racing around with 3 old guys from Michigan. They were a lot of fun.

If I had to choose between my two adventures, I would choose the school as it blew away the thrill of the hang gliding. The speeds and G forces in Nascar are indescribable. The first step from 1300 feet with a kite on your back is scary too, but the nascar school is still one of my greatest memories.
